Regular servicing is important as it will check your brakes to ensure any required repairs are addresses early to minimise any potential safety issues but if you do suddenly notice a change in the behaviour of the brake pedal or the breaking performance of your vehicle, you should get this checked out as soon as possible. The issue could be be down to the condition of your brake pads or brake disks or possibly a problem with your brake fluid or the pipes carrying the fluid. Wear or your brake pads and discs is an inevitable part of driving, so they will always need to be changed on a regular basis. The level or regularity will depend on the amount your drive, the type of driving you many cover and your style of driving in relating to your braking habits. Driving a full laden vehicle means that the brakes need to bring a heavier vehicle to a halt, which places more strain, friction and heat on the brakes speeding up the wearing process. If you have a full car, which sometimes can't be avoided be mindful to adjust your driving style accommodate this extra weight and give yourself more time and space to slow down. The same can be said for sharp acceleration followed by sharp breaking. Breaking from higher speeds will more pressure on all parts of your brake system.

When your pads and brakes become worn you should be able to tell that braking takes longer and you need to apply more force on the brake pedal. This symptom could also be down to an issue with the levels of brake fluid in your braking system. If the pipes housing the brake fluid are damaged or there is a leak this will impact the amount of hydraulic pressure that can be applied to the braking system. If there is wear around the seal and dirt or moisture can get into the fluid this will impact braking performance too.

Another sign that you need to be aware of, although it will be hard not to notice, is if your brake pedal is vibrating. This may be down to your brake system simply requiring some minor adjustments to be made rather than replacing worn brake parts. As well as the vibrating, it is likely that braking will not be as sharp either and you may also notice that your car pulls to one side when applying the brakes. Depending on the age of your vehicle your dashboard may also indicate a potential issue with your brakes, clearly not a warning light to be ignored!
